Camp Sunshine Halfway to $200K Road Race Fundraising Goal

The organization has raised more than $100,000 for the 5K run/2K walk for camp counselors that begins later this month.

is more than halfway to its $200,000 fundraising goal for the 2011 Keencheefoonee Road Race.

The race–a 5K run/2K walk–will be held twice over two weeks of camp starting June 25, said Lindsey Monroe, a Camp Sunshine spokeswoman. The race is run by about 150 volunteer counselors and not open to the public. It was started to raise awareness and help children with cancer go to summer camp and attend other Camp Sunshine programs year-round.

As of Monday, the camp had raised $101,665 and expects several hundred donors. The camp is also looking for corporate sponsors. People interested in contributing through a single donation or through sponsoring a participant should visit the race's website here.

For those of you who don't know about the Clairmont Road organization, Camp Sunshine was started in 1982 by Dorothy Jordan, a pediatric nurse. Its first camp opened for 44 children the next year. Aside from camps, the organization provides resources for families of children with cancer and has been expanding across the state since 2006, according to its website.
