Dancers to Honor Former North Druid Hills Teacher

A group of former students is trying to organize a party for their former dance teacher, Carolyn Fleetwood, who taught in the area starting in the 1960s.

I was asked to put out this call to all former dancing students of Carolyn Fleetwood. Several of her former students are organizing a party for her late next month.

From Wyndy Amerson, one of the organizers:

Carolyn Fleetwood attended Bass High School. After college, she married and opened her first Dance Studio near current location of Whole Foods at LaVista and Briarcliff. She moved to the "little blue house" on North Decatur in the early 60's where the current Emory Clinic now stands. Her dance studio grew with the population of DeKalb and she moved to Williamsburg Village at Clairmont and Briarcliff so students from Druid Hills, Briarcliff, Lakeside and Tucker school communities could easily attend dance classes after school. She held her recitals at Lakeside High every spring.

Carolyn Fleetwood also choreographed many of the performances of the Atlanta Children's Civic Theater which held performances every spring at the former 14 Street Playhouse.

Many of her students went on to major in dance and pursue careers in dance and theater.

Carolyn's daughter opened a dance studio on States Bridge Road in Duluth. Her son, Mark, coaches football at Peachtree Ridge High. She also has one other son, Scott. All three of her children attended Lakeside High.

Several former students of Carolyn's are holding a "surprise" tribute for Carolyn at the Peachtree Ridge High School auditorium on Saturday, March 24th, 7 PM. There will be a reception after the performance of several current dance companies whose directors studied dance under Carolyn. We invite all former dance students of Fleetwood Dance Studio and the Atlanta Children's Civic Theater to attend the tribute to Carolyn on Saturday, March 24th. Please let Wyndy Amerson know if you will be able to attend (WyndyAmerson@gmail.com).

YES! LOVE CAROLYN - started taking from her the first year she opened (had taken on Lavista from another teacher from age 3 - 7). Love her - she let me start "helping" as a teach assistant to pay for extra classes (bartering) when I was only 12 or 13. I absolutely lived, breathed and danced my way through high school at her studio. She later allowed me to teach some, along with my best buds Zandi Ralston and Dotti Moreland (Warren). LOVE her - Carolyn was so sweet to throw a wedding shower for me at her home! Lost touch years ago, but I will always cherish those wonderful days.....kept me out of trouble in high school!
