Georgia Power: Outages Likely Caused by Downed Tree Limb
Sunday's rain and wind likely caused a sporadic number of power outages throughout the area.
Sporadic power outages throughout the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area Sunday evening were likely caused by a down tree limb or some other minor event related to continuous wind and rain, a Georgia Power representative said.
Reports from communities include Oak Grove and Medlock said power flickered or turned off entirely around roughly 6:30 p.m. Along North Druid Hills Road near Medlock, power was shut off for about 15 to 20 minutes.
"Typically what happens is tree limbs get heavy with wind and rain, and a tree limb will fall," said John Kraft, a Georgia Power spokesman. "If it was [an entire] tree and ripped the wire out, you’d probably be out a couple hours."
Kraft said he was unaware reports of outages, which could have also been caused by a car accident. But he said no accidents had been reported either.

I have lived in this area for over 50 years and I have NEVER seen such a string of outages and power flickers over the last 1.5 years.... there is NO EXCUSE for power to go off in the middle of the day when NO WIND, RAIN, OR other contributing factors are present, YET this happens at least 3 to 4 times a month NOW.
What is wrong with GA Power that they are incapable of maintaining power during periods when there are NO weather issues?
It is very telling that Kraft had no indication there was a problem. NO CLUE that people were without power.... that certainly speaks volumes to their incident reporting system and their commitment to customer service and providing POWER, which is THEIR JOB!

Really? I've had a very different experience. Last night, I couldn't remember the last time the power went off completely. I grew up in Maryland where you lose power three or four times a year, typically due to heavy winds and rain or snow and ice storms. (A tornado or two as well.) I've woken up a few times and noticed after looking at my stove clock that the power cut our during the night, but that's about it. In North Druid Hills, Georgia Power seems to do a pretty good job. Am I just lucky?

Response time is awesome, but outages do seem to have increased. Big difference between apartments, commercial areas and traditionally "hung" residential. Trunks would have to be buried I suppose.

I've wondered if living in an apartment complex makes the difference. I don't know a lot about it, but the power almost never goes off here.
