More City of DeKalb Study?
State Sen. Gloria Butler of Stone Mountain will chair a Senate study committee on the incorporation of the city of DeKalb.

State Sen. Gloria Butler, D-Stone Mountain, will chair a Senate study committee on the incorporation of the city of DeKalb, according to Neighbor Newspapers.
From the story:
Butler will be joined by a group of seven committee members, consisting of fellow legislators and local officials from DeKalb County.
“Throughout the committee process, it is important to remember that the people who live in our cities and counties share an underlying love for their community,” said Butler. “That resource alone needs to be heavily considered when deciding the future of local municipalities. I’m honored that the lieutenant governor has selected me to serve as chair of this committee, and look forward to hearing feedback from the people of DeKalb County.”

So what would be the boundaries of this "City of Dekalb"? Somewhere I read that it would include all of unincorporated Dekalb County. I have tried to contact some of the people supposedly involved in this. Of course, they won't answer. These types never want to talk until THEY decide what THEY want and can get it far enough into the process that it is hard for anyone else to object.

Yes, the idea would be that it would be all of unincorporated DeKalb County. Some of the stated – or unstated – reasons have been to collect city franchise fees from residents to fill budgetary gaps and prevent new cities from incorporating in the county while preventing existing cities from expanding through annexation.

That's a very good question, Lucas. Perhaps the reason the City of DeKalb idea isn't terribly popular with people I've randomly spoken with about it.

Probably the first city in the world with eight cities within its borders. Insane--and the Leg will dismiss if the DeKalb legislators vote to move it forward--which it won't. The Leg is taking apart black-led governments and school systems, not helping them retain power.

This would be terrible. The Druid Hlls/Northlake City better happen first. Druid Hills to Northlake to Medlock is the last section ITP on the north side of town that is not incorporated. We must become a city or the county will allow developers and themselves to further exploit this area.

Tucker did a study in 2005 or 2006 I believe. They found it financially viable, but the public was not for it.....at the time. Sentiment has changed over the past few years though. If Tucker gets to the legislative table first, don't be surprised if they land grab all of the commercial space ITP around Northlake. Tucker is already mapped out, and will be the largest city in DeKalb with the largest population. Whichever new city gets Northlake wins the largest commercial tax base left in unincorporated DeKalb.
The city of DeKalb idea is nothing more than a shadow government. Nothing will change except the removal of any other annexations or new cities. This is the only defense DeKalb has to retain control of the tax dollars.
