Nature Preserve Tool Shed Burns Down After Lightning Strike

The shed at the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve was reduced to a charred heap of metal and wood after yesterday's storms.

A tool shed at the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve in Medlock burned to the ground yesterday after it was struck by lighting.

Heavy thunderstorms tore through the Atlanta area Sunday evening, knocking out power to thousands while businesses and residents in North Druid Hills appeared to keep theirs.Β

The fire, which was put out by county firefighters, reduced the shed to a pile of charred metal and wood. The shed is in a wooded area, but none of the surrounding foliage was burned by the fire.

DeKalb County Fire Department officials confirmed the shed had been struck by lightning, said Edward Kujawski, who sits on the preserve's board of directors.

The board plans to replace the shed, which housed tools for volunteer workers including rakes, shovels and tiki torches for events at the preserve, Kujawski said.Β
