UPDATE: Gingrich 2nd in Gwinnett GOP Straw Poll; Paul Wins

In Suwanee, Gingrich calls Georgia crucial to his election hopes.

Updated Feb. 19, 2012

Calling President Obama the "most dangerous president in modern American history," Newt Gingrich made bold statements on the current administration and his presidential plans in a speech Saturday in Suwanee. The talk followed an earlier Gingrich rally Saturday in Forsyth County.

The former U.S. House speaker was introduced to the crowd of about 400 people at Collins Hill High by Atlanta-based businessman Herman Cain, who ended his presidential campaign in December and recently threw his support behind Gingrich.

Attacking Obama on several fronts, Gingrich said the president "refuses to tell the truth about people who want to hurt us." He said Obama's approach to national defense "is the most destructive unilateral disarmament I've ever seen."

Gingrich's speech followed a meeting of the Gwinnett County Republican Party elsewhere at the school. At that meeting, Ron Paul finished ahead of Gingrich in a straw poll.

Paul collected 115 votes to Gingrich's 73. Finishing third was former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum with 60 votes. Mitt Romney, currently the overall delegate leader among GOP candidates, got 25 votes.

State Rep. Buzz Brockway was among those wearing a Santorum sticker at the GOP meeting. Brockway said, "I don't dislike (Gingrich). ... At this point, the race is wide open, so I'm going to vote for the candidate with the best chance to win."

U.S. Rep Rob Woodall, who represents Suwanee and parts of Gwinnett in Congress, attended Saturday's GOP meeting. He has not decided on who to support, noting that his backing hinges on which candidate supports the Fair Tax.

Gingrich talked of the importance of the Georgia primary on March 6 (Super Tuesday), when the state's 73 delegates will be up for grabs. After the speech, he called his former home state a "springboard" for possible success in such states as Texas and California.

"I need your help," Gingrich told the crowd, which twice gave him a standing ovation.

The reason that Ron Paul never goes down in the polls is that he’s not “convincing” people in the everyday sense that he’s right on whatever issue. He’s activating human souls, lighting spiritual fires one by one speaking about freedom. Once a soul gets activated, and the man realizes that he IS free no matter what people do to him or tell him, there is no turning back.
Yet, we cannot expect every man woman and child to understand or get excited about the message of liberty. In fact, most just can’t handle it. Being truly free is as terrifying as it is electrifying.

Not everyone can handle the message of freedom. It’s too frightening for some people, and some are just too enslaved. Those are the people that despise Ron Paul, the same types who rebelled against Moses in the desert and attempted to go back to Egypt. Freedom is too much for them and they can’t handle the Divine gift. They want and need someone to control them. Their souls have been too battered by slavery, taxation, and wars...........

Ron Paul is the extreme opposite of Obama and we don't need that in the White House! Romney says what he thinks everyone wants to hear just like Obama did when he ran. Santorum is good but lacks the experience. Gingrich has a lot of baggage but he is the only one that can go head to head with Obama in debates and sway people to vote Republican. Just look after the debates and you will see that Gingrich has just about won them all and now nobody wants to debate with him. Why is that? We don't need another experiment in the White House with non-qualified Presidential Candidate. Are we prepared to put a timid President in the White House that wants to bring all our troops home from around the world which leaves us who travel around the world vulnerable. Wake up Georgians, the only real candidate that has bold ideas that will change all the wrongs that this administration has done is Newt Gingrich!!!!

This is false and misleading and should be removed immediately from this piece:"Mitt Romney, currently the overall delegate leader among GOP candidates"

I think you're wrong, but I think it's irrelevant before Super-Tuesday, at least this election cycle. It could end up being Romney or Santorum... or if proof that Romney is a polygamist comes out the same day proof Santorum is a Nazi, it might be Gingrich. Or, God answers the prayers of the young with supernatural intervention, it could be Paul, but that's the only way.

@Jonathan... That's where the "misleading" part comes in. As you said but the article did not, they are "estimates". If you read the methodology listed at the WSJ and the NYT and compare that to how delegates are actually selected (which differs significantly from state to state), it is very misleading. For instance, look at CNN estimates: http://www.cnn.com/election/2012/primaries.html

But any journalist knows that, as with 2004 and 2008, the most accurate delegate estimates -- because they're based on the actual rules of each state's contest -- can be found at thegreenpapers.com -- http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P12/

Finally, when you read the headline (probably the editor's choice) and the content of the article, it's easy to see why readers would consider the article misleading. The winner of the poll is barely mentioned and, Newt, the guy that has no chance of getting the nomination without a brokered convention (because he is not even on the ballot in his home state) is the focal point of this article.

Because a Ron Paul headline would definitely get more hits (that's what Patch wants, right?), you can't blame readers for assuming the reason the article and headline were written in they way the were.

They are showing beauty contest=delegates. Doesn't work that way.

In caucus states delegates are not bound by their states votes. Only in winner take all states are the delegates required to vote for the winner of the popular/beauty vote.

WSJ knows this. So does NYT. But they have an agenda and you WILL follow it.

XXX XXXX for president. (this endorsement approved by the MSM).

Also, if it goes to a brokered convention ALL of the delegates will be unbound and can vote how they please. If the Dr Paul momentum continues to increase (see his Washington State rallys,,, like a rock star) he could actually do very well in all states.

If we keep voting for more of the same that we have always been getting, we will always keep getting more of the same.

I guess I would have to agree with Newt on this one. Obama is the most dangerous president we've had. Just ask Osama Bin Laden.
Taking out all the top Al Qaeda leaders is a destructive unilateral disarmament. Most Americans, I think, would applaud that. It makes you wonder what side Newt is actually on.

That success belongs to our military and our intelligence people. Obama had no choice in the decision. He didn't want to be like Clinton who passed on the opportunity to take out Bin Laden. I think he also agreed because of politics and not because it was the right thing to do.

Newt is a loose cannon blabber mouth. He is on his home turf and can fan the flames of race hatred against President Obama. Bigotry and idiocy inherited from ancestors who were England's worst criminals and vagabonds, and backwards thinking sentiment are also at work here. Old Uncle Tom Herman Cain had better not get caught looking at "their" woman up there in Suwanee. Closing 300 pizza joints and putting 3,000 people out of work overnight to prove how good a businessman you are won't matter to those folks in Forsyth County. It is what it is, Mr. Her Man Cain. Grinning and shuffling for money is your game and we know it. Any -- repeat -- ANY candidate for statewide political office who thinks as highly of Black people as they think of others OR who is Black and does not HATE and DISPISE his own kind and does not blame them en mass for everything bad that has EVER happened to them will definitely not fare well in statewide politics in Georgia. That's a fact -- ask Wyche Fowler, Max Cleland, Roy Barnes, and Thurbert Baker, and many many others. Courageous and fair-minded candidates who are NOT racist fear mongerers would not act and speak ike Newt who is lazy and resorts to the old adage: "When in Georgia, tell those antebellum minded Crackers what they think they want to hear" not what they actually NEED to hear. Speaking of foolishness. Fat mouth Newt takes the cake.

You should be capable of discussing politics without using such racially loaded phrases regarding a black man: "Uncle Tom" and "his own kind" would not be used of a white man, nor Asian, nor any other race. And "Crackers" is a racially bigoted term for whites. There is no need to use such racially bigoted language.

Of course the 'establishment' and media types will be looking for employment as well. Ask me if I sympathize. No I do not! They are leeches.

The truth is, the reason Republicans are so undecided at this point, we don't really care who our nominee turns out to be. We will march to the polls and vote for any one of them. They all have their baggage, but the least one among them is still head and shoulders far better than what is in our oval office at the moment. For this very reason, I have stopped even following this run-up to the primary. I have already made up my mind. Anyone but obama!

The reason it doesn't matter how much oil we produce domestically is because it is all sold on the world market. OPEC sets the price of oil not the president. Before you channel your hatred for our president it would be nice if you understood global economics. If you think a different president would change this you are dreaming.
