Olympic Track Star is Druid Hills Middle Principal's Nephew

Principal Robert Thorpe is an uncle to Angelo Taylor, the famed Atlanta track and field star who is competing in this summer's Olympic Games in London.

We've been telling you a lot about Tim Hornsby, the sprint kayaker and Lakeside High School graduate, who will later compete in the Olympics.

But here's another Olympian with a root in the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area: Angelo Taylor, the nephew of Druid Hills Middle School Principal Robert Thorpe.

Taylor was recently elected captain of Team USA's Olympic track and field squad. He will compete in the 400m Hurdles and won gold in the event in the 2000 and 2008 Olympics.

He hopes to become the first Olympian to win three golds in the event.

From a recent email to Druid Hills Middle parents:

As the London Olympics approach you might be interested in knowing that our very own Principal Mr. Robert Thorpe has a nephew in the Olympics!

It is very exciting to watch this Olympian, knowing that he is from Atlanta and related to our community(and of course an extremely talented and fast athlete!)!

He came to DHMS 2012 Career Day and met with many of our students!

Angelo runs Aug 3, 4 & 6th. the relays on the 8th & 9th.  We all wish the best for you Angelo and will be cheering you on from the US and Druid Hills Middle School!

Here's a schedule for all track and field events. A link to the TV schedule is on the left menu bar on the same page.
