Suburban Plaza To Include Community Kiosks, Walls for Public Art

An update from the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association says all construction should be finished by fall 2014.

The Medlock Area Neighborhood Association (MANA) has posted another update about plans for Suburban Plaza.

Developer Selig Enterprises plans to demolish part of the aging shopping center, rebuild, renovate and add a Super Walmart.

Highlights of MANA's update:

  • Selig has commissioned "a local artist to create custom-painted graphic walls. Instead of having a long expanse of wall, we have an opportunity for public art at the shopping center."
  • There will be two community kiosks, "permanent structures which will allow for the temporary sale of items such as girl scout cookies, works by local artists, food, etc."
  • Selig plans to use sustainable building materials.
  • A map of buildings to be demolished and drawings of what Suburban Plaza should look like.
  • Timetable: "Demolition and construction are still estimated to begin in the first half of 2013.  Selig anticipates that all construction will be complete by fall of 2014."

I'll believe it when I see it. The Wal-Mart at Memorial and Columbia was supposed to have a bunch of cool stuff too. Never happened.

True to that Gina...Promised so much, but Walmart does what it wants once it gets its permits. Still won't shop there.

This is nonsense. Walmart always makes these promises but once they're in, you can't get them out and they know that. The Walmart on Memorial was supposed to be 'mixed use' but it never happened.

Concessions aren't legally binding. The Walmart spokesperson told Ace Hardware in initial 'concessions' that they wouldn't have a garden center either. Six months later they decide to put one in - and suggested it was in the works all along. Their word is worthless.

Selig can commission anyone they want, at the end of the day they are still shoving a Wallmart into another neighbor. As far as I'm concerned Wallmart is the spawn of Satan, and Selig is right there with Wallmart.
