Walker Resigns. A Step in the Right Direction?

Take our North Druid Hills-Briarcliff Patch poll and tell us what you think about DeKalb BOE's chairman relinquishing his position.

DeKalb Board of Education Chairman Eugene Walker resigned from his leadership position on Monday, leaving the embattled school board free to elect a new leader before Thursday's pivotal meeting with the State Board of Education.

CrossRoads News is reporting that Walker announced his resignation during Monday's specially called school board meeting.

The school board is expected to meet again at 5:30 pm on Wednesday to select a new chairman.

On Thursday at 8 am, DeKalb's school board will appear once again before the State Board of Education. DeKalb's board must convince state authorities that they are making progress in meeting requirements set forth by the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools, which has placed the school board under probation.

Patch will be covering that meeting live as it happens on Thursday morning.

The state board will then recommend to Gov. Nathan Deal whether the school board should be removed or kept in place.

Patch wants to know: Do you believe Walker's resignation is a step in the right direction? Take our Patch poll and share your thoughts in the Comments section below.

The resignation of Eugene Walker as chair of the BOE is the first step to dismantling the worst decade of bad leadership. I know it is no coincidence that his departure as chair comes after the appointment of Michael Thurmond as superintendent. I have great confidence in the integrity of five of our board members and hope they will follow the leadership of Mr. Thurmond. The road to restoring this school system has to point in the direction of honesty, integrity and the interests of all the students of DeKalb County. The side roads taken by the former school board led us down mud roads where that bus got mired in the muck of self-interests. I hope we are getting back on a paved road.

Really disappointed to find that he only resigned as Chair, not from the Board. I imagine his buddy Thurmond told him he should. Interested to see if the Board can pick a new Chair without being badly splint and also if Walker abstains from the vote.

It' a small step in the right direction, but what we need are big steps. This small step will not make enough difference.

Too small a step, Dr. Walker. Resign from the Board. Where do y'all think the Board will get the money to sue? That's right. Your teachers don't mind another pay cut. We make $4,000 a year less than we did two years ago, and there are "new" teachers in their seventh year of teaching who have never received a step of experience or any kind of raise. Hmmm....do you think they are encouraged to work the longer hours it takes to prepare students for the new assessments? Mr. Thurmond, please take a look at how the Board has voted to spend taxpayers' money.
