What Should Go Here?

Checkers at North Druid Hills Road and Lawrenceville Highway pulled up anchors and left recently. In your humble opinion, dear readers, what should replace it?

I don't know precisely when, but Checkers recently pulled up stakes and bounced from their foothold at the intersection of North Druid Hills Road and Lawrenceville Highway. It's a corner for which I have an odd appreciation. The Shell station convenience store across the street is open 24 hours. (It's also gets robbed at gunpoint, occasionally, but what are you gonna do.) Plus, that station always has the cheapest gas in the area. If you don't believe me, check it. Pretty consistently the cheapest.

So, now that Checkers is gone, what would you like to see replace it? Fast food buildings never stay vacant for more than 72 hours it seems, so make your suggestions quickly. And before you suggest Chick-fil-A, remember there's already one there. (That said, the idea of two neighboring Chick-fil-As intrigues... )

So, what are your suggestions? Get them in quick. Tell us in the comments section below.

And before anyone suggest Zaxby's, know that they're already coming to the area. Type Zaxby's into the search field, and a link to a story should come up.

I drove by sometime in November and noticed it gone and reported to Eli who wrote up this cool piece on Checkers:

And you didn't think to email your loyal, backyard reporter? The one, the only Jonathan Cribbs? Don't you know who I am, sir!

Ah well. That fellow is a fine business reporter. I will give you that.

An unlikely suggestion, Dennis. Based on the article's subject and the content of your comment, I think you may have what some call a preoccupation there, buddy.

If you look at all of the properties that have changed hands at that intersection and the amount of underutilized real estate, it begs questions about general trends in business (local vs national, fast food, walking vs driving, real estate valuations, etc) and economic development. Togerther with North DeKalb Mall, the entire intersection is ripe for a redevelopment plan by DeKalb County. In total, the land area approaches that of the GM Doraville plant.
You also have similar planning efforts which include mass transit from Toco Hills to Buford Highway on North Druid Hils Road. Then of course, you have the proposed LCI attempted at Suburban Plaza (a future rail stop).
My guess is any fast food, etc that goes in here will be short-lived and individual properties will give way to more comprehensive (and connected) development.

I had heard that a Golden Corral was being built in the corner of the parking lot (mall parking lot) right next to where the Checkers was located.

Donna, you're right. I wrote about this back in June and then later they fixed the signage problem, so I believe it's all systems go... http://northdruidhills.patch.com/articles/golden-corral-plans-meet-zoning-delay

That Chik-fil-a basically killed the one inside North DeKalb Mall, though, so putting another Chik-fil-a right next to it would be like dividing by zero or something. I say a Dunkin' Donuts with a drive-through. The closest Dunkies is at North Druid Hills and Lavista and it doesn't have a drive-through at all. It seems like an underserved area.
