A Request to DeKalb County Interim Superintendent of Schools Michael Thurmond

Dear Mr. Thurmond:

On behalf of all students and most parents and taxpayers of DeKalb County, Georgia, I write to you asking that you show your dedication and interest in restoring confidence, integrity and a focus on our classrooms and children in the DeKalb County School District by immediately asking your friend, Dr. Eugene Walker, to resign from his position on the DeKalb County Board of Education.

Anything less than that shows that the interests of our students and schools will continue to be ignored while we slide further towards losing accreditation.  Chairman Walker has proven that he is incapable of leading the current Board towards anything but chaos, dysfunction and incompetence.  His repeated denials of having any awareness of troubles within the school system illustrates the need for his immediate removal.

If Chairman Walker truly is concerned for the well-being and education of our county's children, he would do what is right and step away before he causes further harm.  Hopefully, as his friend, you can advise him of the need for this action.

The time has come to return our attention on the classrooms instead of the board rooms.

Our children are our greatest assets and our schools are the backbones of our communities.

Let's treat both accordingly.

Sincerely,

Shawn M. Keefe

Nothing says, "I put kids first" more than "I'll sue if you fire me, Gov. Deal!" This after your lousy job record and sleeping in meetings.

Shawn is absolutely correct. Dr. Walker has led this board down the road of destruction. I almost was shocked at his on camera comment at his morning. No nepotism? He has 3 relatives working for the school system. He is going to court to save his job? I am dumbfounded. The funds no longer exist for our children because they have been squandered on defending corruption, legal fees for high priced lawyers. Everything that board has done or approved seems to have led to a lawsuit of some sort. And THAT is his answer to the state board's recommendation? I hope that Michael Thurmond reads Shawn's letter. I have a lot of faith in M. Thurmond but now he has got to get really tough and go clean out all the fat that has been accumulating in the central office and slam the door on dealings that LAWSUIT.

Mr. Thurmond, this would be a great opportunity for you, our interim Superintendent, to show your dedication to our students, teachers, taxpayers and the DEKALB COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT by advising Dr. Eugene Walker that it is time for his resignation from the Board of Education. If he were to take this course of action, Sarah Copelin-Wood and potentially others (I'm talking to you, Jay Cunningham) would follow in his footsteps, IMHO. In addition, this would allow, as is my understanding, a special election for his seat on the Board. Hopefully, with all that has gone on with this Board under Dr. Walker's leadership, the voters in his district will come together and bring a new voice to the Board who will help lead DCSD to one of excellence.

Mr. Shawn, hopefully, you have followed this up with a formal request via return receipt mail and copied all of the usual suspects? You do know all of these folks are in denial, right?

Special hamburgers for all board members doing the right thing . . . If they are sincere about the school system progress, instead of their personal well being . . .

Please pass they yellow mustard!
