Septic Maintenance (That's Greener, Too)

Maintaining your septic system is necessary to help prevent problems and failures. It is also extremely important to care for your septic system in a way that's environmentally friendly, too. Failing septic systems can become an environmental hazard.

Action Septic Tank Service recommends keeping your septic system maintained with regular service and inspections, and also in a way that's greener. Below are some environmentally-friendly tips to help keep your septic system safe and properly maintained.

1.  Keep hazardous chemicals from entering your septic system. They get rid of the good bacteria that live inside your septic tank and break down waste. These chemicals could also contaminate the groundwater. Examples include fuels, motor oils, antifreeze and pesticides.

2.  Use household cleaning products that are environmentally safe. Avoid using products containing too much bleach, pine oils and other hazardous chemicals.

3.  Install a septic filter to prevent solids and non-biodegradable objects from entering and clogging the drainfield. Make sure the filter is cleaned whenever your septic system is serviced.

4.  Conserve water. This will protect your septic system from a lot of added wear and tear. Conserve water by checking leaky faucets and pipes, fixing any running toilets, insulating water pipes, taking shorter showers, installing water-saving shower heads, turning off the water while brushing your teeth, using your dishwasher and washing machines only for full loads, and using energy efficient dishwashing and washing machines. Look for the Energy Star symbol.
