Five Things to Do This Week

Dieting, trivia, paper shredders are more this week in the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area.

Need something to do this week? Live in the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area? Unwilling, unable or annoyed by the thought of driving outside the community to do something? Well, this post was conceived with you in mind. Enjoy.

  • Whole Foods Market is running a sort of dieting club this month. It's called The Engine 2 Diet, a plant-based diet that can benefit your overall health. Each Monday, participants will meet at the store, 2111 Briarcliff Rd., for motivation and good food.  To get started, buy The Engine 2 Diet and sign up for the free seminars at jayme.persons@wholefoods.com. The group meets Mondays, including tonight, from 7pm to 8pm.
  • The CEO is coming to town. DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis will meet tomorrow with constituents–us–at the Leafmore Creek Park Clubhouse, 1373 Altamont Dr., to discuss his 2011 budget proposal, which includes a 2.32 mill tax hike. The budget totals out at $563.3 million, about $13 million more than last year. Patch does not expect this to be a cheery meeting, but it's not very often you're going to have Ellis' ear. The meeting will begin at 7pm and end around 8:30pm.
  • runs a trivia tournament on Wednesdays from 8pm to 10:30pm. It's a comfy pub, and trivia teams are awesome. Patch has been on several. We're always the go-to guy for film trivia. "Which Field of Dreams star's first moving acting gig was in Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove?" JAMES EARL JONES! JAMES EARL JONES! WRITE JAMES EARL JONES!
  • The Sentimental Journey Orchestra will perform inside Holy Cross Catholic Church's sanctuary Friday. The Atlanta-based orchestra plays big band music. The performance begins at 7pm at 3773 Chamblee Tucker Rd.
  • Here's a new one: Joan Kaplan at Drake Realty is hosting a "Shred Fest" this Saturday between 9am and noon. What does that mean? Exactly what it sounds like. Bring a whole bunch of paper–old documents and stuff–there and shred it. On its face, this event sounds ridiculous. But identity theft is a pretty serious problem, and paper shredders are fun. For more information contact Kaplan at 404-281-4106 or joan@joankaplan.com.
