The Odd Life is about a childless couple unable to conceive that buries a box in their backyard, containing their wishes for an infant. When their child is born, however, Timothy Green isn't all that he appears. In addition to Garner the film stars Joel Edgerton, a rising Australian actor with a recent role in the small Oscar-nominated film Animal Kingdom, and Ron Livingston (Office Space). The movie is directed by Peter Hedges, known for his two other films Dan in Real Life and Pieces of April and his novel, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which was adapted into a film in 1993.

Filming at the fields is scheduled to continue through tomorrow and will include some of the league’s players. The fields were selected for shooting after the production scouted soccer facilities across the Atlanta region, said Mike Reilly, one of the film's location managers.

“We needed some green around the fields because this part of the movie takes place in the summer, and we were locating the shoot in December," Reilly said. "The pine trees around the fields were unique.”

Although not stated specifically, the company already had chosen Decatur as one of several sites for its fictitious small town “Stanleyville." Reilly, who lives outside Clarkston, said he has made films in Decatur before. The movie is also shooting scenes in Cherokee, Coweta, Dawson and Morgan counties.

Georgia’s film tax credit program is lucrative enough to be at least a “tie breaker” when considering inter-state competition, Reilly said. The movie's production budget has been reported to be around $40 million, and the production has donated to the youth soccer league, the Tucker/Henderson Park Community Garden next to the fields and the DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs.

St. Bede’s and Northlake Mall are being paid for parking area as well as local extras. The school system is also being paid for the use of a closed school site.
