Suburban Plaza to Have 'Look' of Shops Around Lenox

Developer shows drawings to neighborhood groups.

A renovated Suburban Plaza may look something like the Shops Around Lennox, according to information and drawings released by the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association.

Theresa Same of MANA wrote on the association website:

Selig has hired Associated Space Design (ASD) to design the redevelopment of Suburban Plaza (SP). ASD recently designed the Shops Around Lennox near Lennox Mall. The redevelopment at SP will have some similar design concepts that you see at the Shops Around Lenox and yet will have a unique look as they attempt to blend the many different architectural styles found in the Decatur area.

Leaders from MANA and other neighborhood associations have been meeting with Selig to talk about the project.

Some residents of the Decatur area have complained because the renovation includes the construction of a Super Walmart.

Same wrote that "Walmart is responsible for the design of their building. Once Selig has selected the final material/color palate for the redevelopment, Walmart will incorporate similar elements to create a cohesive look for the shopping center."

Selig hopes to start demolition of Suburban Plaza in the first half of 2013. The company has already applied for demolition permits.
