They Used to Make Bombs in North Druid Hills?

A big chunk of the community used to be dominated by E.V. Camp Steel Works on North Druid Hills Road.

Along your morning commute you might drive past The Conservatory at Druid Hills on North Druid Hills Road. Or you occasionally drive golf balls at Grand Slam Golf & Baseball on the same road. It's a heavily wooded area where, today, people simply live in homes and apartments.

But decades ago, the area was alive, grinding and chugging with commerce and capitalism. It was the home of E.V. Camp Steel Works, according to Atlanta Time Machine, a great site that chronicles the Atlanta area's past with old photos and articles.

The website posted a 1961 article from Georgia Magazine that included a feature on the factory on North Druid Hills Road. What did it make? A ton of steel stuff, in short. And in World World II, bombs. Lots of bombs.
