Last Weekend's Top Pick and Top Picks for Fun this Weekend

In The Know ATL - Places to visit and things to do in and around Atlanta recommended by someone "in the know".

If you missed Atlanta Streets Alive last Sunday afternoon, maybe you don't realize how cool Atlanta can be.  And if you did make it, you are "in the know".

Imagine a two-mile stretch of N. Highland Avenue closed off to cars and you will see a sea of people walking, riding bikes, pushing strollers, and everyone enjoying the grand feeling of a beautiful day.  The main event of Atlanta Streets Alive is the Great Atlanta Halloween Bicycle ride that follows a route along N.Highland Ave to Atlanta Beltline's Eastside Trail.  As you ride or walk you pass historic homes, house parties, and people stopping along the way to sample tastes from foodtrucks, stop at restaurant, retail shop, or just just grab a beer and keep going.

I wish we could have Atlanta Streets Alive more than once a year, maybe even once a month, it creates both a wonderfully mellow and exciting vibe intown. AtlantaStreetsAlive.com

Top Picks for 10/13 & 10/14

There are so many festivals and events to choose from this time of year.  You could spend hours scouring websites and news publications for your options.  But why not save the time and get it from someone "in the know".  You may be "in the know" too, so feel free to add to my list.

Candler Park Festival - 10/13 noon to 10 pm & 10/14 noon to 8 pm: This festival is awesome.  The best part of it is the music. You will also find the typical artists' market, kids' area, and food.  It can get a little crowded during the evening, but this is a mellow crowd. candlerparkfallfest.com

Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival - 10/13 - 10 am to 7 pm:
Is the Oakhurst area still "up and coming" or has it arrived?  Every year this event gets bigger. Again the typical artist market, kids' activities and music, but they also have a Dog Costume contest.  The highlight of this festival is the parade that starts at 2 pm. oakhurstartsandmusicfestival.com

Family Block Party, hosted by Atlanta Parent Magazine - 10/13 - 10 am to 4 pm: This event is filled with activities for families.  It can get crowded.  It costs $5 per person to enter(2 and youngeer are free) and the admission includes 3 activity tickets.  This means be prepared to spend money in order to do more activities.  And it is cash only.  There are some free activities and some activities that require tickets.  The number of tickets for each activity and the activities that are free are listed in the Festival Guide. You can view last year's guide on line at http://issuu.com/atlantaparent/docs/festivalguide/3

Here are some other activities to check out......

Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr., 10/13 & 10/14 at 1 pm at OnStage Atlanta; Atlanta Fit Fest, 10/13, 10 am to 5 pm, at the Georgia World Congress Center; Morningside Mile, 10/14, noon to 2 pm starting at Virginia Ave. & Lanier Blvd ending at Virginia Ave. at Doc Chey's.
