Good Growth DeKalb Unhappy with Design for Decatur Crossing

Good Growth DeKalb has several concerns with the proposed design of Decatur Crossing, a shopping center to be built at the intersection of Scott Boulevard and North Decatur Road.

Good Growth DeKalb, the group fighting the proposed construction of a Wal-Mart Super Center in North Decatur, has “serious questions” about the proposed design for Decatur Crossing that were submitted by Fuqua Development earlier this week.

The site for Decatur Crossing is directly across the street from where the proposed Wal-Mart would stand.

Louise Runyon, co-chair of Good Growth DeKalb, said the group is unhappy about many of the proposed changes to the area.

“For one thing, we really don’t want to see the church torn down,” Runyon said, referring to Scott Boulevard Baptist Church, which is currently occupying the site of the proposed shopping center.

The group also opposed the five-story apartment building that would be built behind the church site.

“We feel it will be very oppressive to our skyline,” Runyon said.

The group’s final and perhaps biggest concern is in regards to pedestrian safety at the intersection of Scott Boulevard and North Decatur Road.

“Nobody ever has any answers to the pedestrian and traffic problems in our intersection,” Runyon said.  “Barring pedestrian bridges it’s just too challenged an intersection.”

Fuqua Development expects construction on Decatur Crossing to be completed by next spring.
