Northlake Community Update

NCA will help sponsor a paper shred day on April 30.

The Northlake Community Alliance conducted its monthly board of trustees meeting Thursday at its 2302 Parklake Drive office. Chairman Tom Ulbricht reported to the board that NCA’s Green Communities initiative got off to a roaring start last month with a busy Electronics Recycling Day (see photos) in the parking lot.

Ulbricht reported that about 300 vehicles dropped off several tons of electronics devices, thereby saving area landfills from contamination. ERS Inc. handled the recycling and over $1,000 was raised for NCA’s community-building efforts. Simon Youth Foundation got a check for $300 as well.

The NCA Green Communities effort will continue on Saturday, April 30, from 9am until noon, with Community Shred Day. Up to five copier paper-sized boxes or equivalent bags will be accepted in the parking lot at 2300 Henderson Mill Rd. NE. Sponsors are the bank, Eagle Secure Shredding, Ga. Dist. 82 Rep. Scott Holcomb and NCA.

James Tsismanakis, executive director of the DeKalb Convention & Visitors Bureau, attended the meeting and announced that the DCVB will have an open house at its headquarters on May 9 at 1957 Lakeside Parkway, Suite 510 in Tucker. He explained that DCVB is attempting to promote economic development through tourism and the open house will help showcase their mission.

Ulbricht reported that the upcoming Northlake Festival Chick-fil-A will open May 27. He also said a national chain is considering moving into the nearby shuttered Fuddruckers restaurant.

Rep. Holcomb looked back at his first legislative session. He said his goals were to work hard, learn, be civil and reach out to the other side. Holcomb offered two pieces of legislation – banning BPA in baby bottles and keeping e-waste out of landfills.

Holcomb regretted the Georgia Legislature failing to reform an income tax system that he said was relevant decades ago for a manufacturing-based state.

The NCA will hold its annual meeting on May 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Back Lot Building of Briarlake Baptist Church. Law enforcement representatives will discuss gang activity in the Northlake community. NCA is a public, non-profit organization run by community volunteers to sustain and improve the Northlake area.
