Report: No Consensus on Cityhood in Sagamore Hills, North Briarcliff

Some residents say they don't want to be annexed into other cities, according to one resident.

When it comes to incorporation in communities like Sagamore Hills, North Briarcliff and Druid Hills, nothing's been decided yet.

And there isn't unified momentum to move things forward either, according to a report this week in The Champion Newspaper.

From the story:

Ray Johnson, who lives in unincorporated north Decatur off Druid Hills Road, said right now there doesn’t seem to be a real consensus among the residents about which direction to go into.

“They are very concerned about what may happen, future annexation, and they don’t seem to have any consensus at the moment,” Johnson said.

Johnson said one of the concerns residents have is that central DeKalb will be left out of the “cityhood movement.”

“The other concern is that they’ll be annexed into a city that they don’t want to be annexed into,” he said. “Johnson said there are concerns that Brookhaven may expand I think there is a plan that maybe next year or the year after they intend to annex across east of I-85.”

Read the story for more details, including comments from county Commissioner Jeff Rader.

Here's another story we ran recently on cityhood grumblings in the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area:

No concensus? The poll that was run on this very website showed a 2-1 opinion against. How is that not concensus? I bought a house in Atlanta (Dekalb County) because I wanted to live in Atlanta, not some yahoo little town no one outside our immediate area has every heard of.

Well, the poll on our site isn't official or scientific, Kay. Regardless, I think the source quoted in the Champion article essentially means there's no consensus to move forward with incorporation – not unlike what you're saying.

Sorry Kay - you don't live in Atlanta unless you reside in the city limits! I live in the city of Atlanta! Have a nice evening in Dekalb County!

Tom, please inform us which city Kay does...in fact...live?

I would be thrilled to be annexed by Brookhaven. Absolutely thrilled. Wouldn't mind being annexed by Chamblee. Even Tucker would be a whole lot better than a "city of Dekalb". Btw, our mailing address is Atlanta. We definitely do not live in Atlanta. That is a post office decision. Even if we were annexed by some city that probably wouldn't change. At least for a while.

No consensus, but the rationale beginning to pile up. Look at the content about new city school systems. Dunwoody is disruptive, bull in china shop--and has all the power it needs from the Republican legislature. "Smart place, smart people" (their words, not mine) and just want to get smarter I suppose. http://www.thecrier.net/our_columnists/article_5bd46dc2-121d-11e2-a5cb-001a4bcf887a.html

Is there someone who is coordinating/researching the possibility of a new city that includes the area south of Briarcliff and east of Clairmont? I don't know who to contact about whether or not this is still being discussed. I noticed that the proposed city of Lakeside doesn't include the Sagamore Hills or Leafmore areas, and there was a mention that these two were in an area also investigating forming a new city.

Good question for tomorrow's Big Meeting at Lakeside High (7:00). The Tale of Two Cities will no doubt be mentioned.
