The Week in Review

The top five stories from the previous week in the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area.

  1. . No contest here. This story was by far the most popular story over the last week and surely the most popular published on this site so far. (We launched Dec. 10.) Michelle Hiskey, a nearby resident and occasional Patch contributor, stumbled on this pretty amazing story about an actual pet detective and his efforts to find a dog that got away from its owner near Mason Mill Park. Tons of people read it. More than 40 posted it to Facebook. Awesome story.
  2. . Not a sexy story by any means, but pesky winter weather not only stranded kids and their parents inside their homes for an entire week. The DeKalb County School System had to back up the timeline on its school consolidation and resdistricting public forums – and the dates the school system and the school board are scheduled to consider the proposals.Β
  3. . I figured this story would get lost in the snow coverage shuffle, and it did. But most people don't know about the important work Global Health Action is doing, and they're headquartered right here in North Druid Hills on Clairmont Road. Patch contributor Matt Amato sat down with the nonprofit's head, Robin Davis, to talk about what's been going on in Haiti since the vast majority of us stopped paying attention.
  4. . Another non-snow story. A local follow-up to the terrible tragedy in Arizona last week. Rep. Hank Johnson's office said it was reconsidering security expenditures in the wake of the deadly rampage that left Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords severly injured and several others dead, including a 9-year-old girl.Β
  5. . Lakeside High School's PTSA got into the school closure/redistricting mix last week, urging its parents to fight any redistricting changes that would break up the elementary and middle schools that currently feed into the high school. With its forthcoming classroom additions, the high school has enough space, the PTSA said.
