Crime & Safety

Crime Blotter, Oct. 16-19

A selection of crimes in our area reported to DeKalb County police.

Shell robbed at gunpoint
The gas station at 2146 Lawrenceville Highway was robbed at gunpoint, and the suspect was pursued by a witness until he drove into unfamiliar neighborhoods, on Oct. 16, DeKalb County police said.

At about 7:12pm, the suspect entered the gas station, greeted the employee on duty, went to the restroom and left. He then came back in around 7:27pm, wearing a black bandana on his face and approached the cash register before pulling a black handgun out of his waistband. The employee went to the safe under the register, put the money on the counter and said, "This is all I have."

The suspect demanded a bag, so the employee put a plastic bag on the counter and the suspect put about $200 in it before leaving.

A witness saw the suspect walk into the gas station the first time as he was filling up his car. When he was finishing up, he heard a loud scream, saw the suspect run out of the station, recognized him and followed him. The suspect got into an older model SUV, possibly a GMC Envoy, and drove east on Lawrenceville Highway before turning onto North Valley Drive. The witness kept following the vehicle, making two right turns down separate streets, but then he grew unfamiliar with the area and left.

No one was injured and surveillance cameras captured the robbery.

The suspect is described as a black male, about 17-24 years old, 5 feet 10 inches, 150 pounds, wearing a black hoodie with a white design and the word "Ocean" on the back, dark pants, dark shoes and gloves, armed with a black automatic handgun.

Quality Inn armed robbery
A man staying at the hotel on 2155 Ranchwood Dr. was robbed at gunpoint on Oct. 16, police said.

The victim had just returned to his room after smoking outside when he heard a knock on the door. He turned the lock to open the door and then two suspects pushed the door open and forced their way into the room.

The first suspect had a black 9mm handgun pointed at the victim. The two suspects pushed the victim onto the bed, searched his pockets and took out his wallet. His wallet contained his New York driver’s license, $153 in cash and his Social Security card. The suspects took the victim into the bathroom and locked him in there before ripping the phone cord from the wall, searching the dresser drawers and taking his luggage.

The suspects were described as:

  • Black male, 5 feet 9 inches, 185 pounds, early 20s, wearing a black hooded jacket and blue jeans, armed with black 9mm handgun.
  • Black male, 5 feet 10 inches, 220 pounds, early 20s, wearing a gray hooded jacket and light blue jeans.

Both suspects covered their faces with their jackets.
