DeKalb Police: Faster Response Times Expected with Precinct Reorganization

From DeKalb County Government:

The DeKalb County Police Department adopted a new, reorganized precinct structure and officers began patrolling the new beats on Oct. 1.  As a part of the reorganization, the Department has divided its patrol areas into four precincts, realigned precinct boundaries and deployed officers to reflect current call volume and location.  The adjustments stem from the recent incorporations of the cities of Brookhaven and Dunwoody and an analysis by the Department that a reduction in precincts is the most effective model for police services.

“These new precinct boundaries are more compact and will allow for a quicker response time for critical emergency calls,” said Interim CEO Lee May.  “This allows us to take immediate action, which will be supplemented by the 160 new officers we will hire in 2014.”

Previously, DeKalb Police were separated among five precincts; however, North Precinct was merged with Center Precinct resulting in the newly created North Central.  The 60 sworn personnel that were assigned to North have been reassigned to North Central and the already existing East Tucker and South precincts, among other areas within the Department.

“A lot of hard work and research went into these modifications which will allow this Department to utilize resources responsibly and ensure officers are providing the most efficient services to this community,” said Chief Cedric Alexander.

DeKalb Police is engaging communities who shifted into a new precinct to provide revised contact information and education to residents about the changes.
