New DeKalb Police Chief to Make Oak Grove Debut

DeKalb County’s new police chief Cedric Alexander will make his debut before the the Oak Grove community on Monday, April 1. 

It's part of the county's recognition of National County Government Month, a month-long celebration to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of county government. This year’s theme is “Smart Justice: Creating Safer Communities.”

Following the swearing-in ceremony in downtown Decatur at 8:30 a.m., county CEO Burrell Ellis and Alexander will visit Oak Grove Market, 2757 Lavista Road, from 1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Here's some background about Alexander from a county statement:

Prior to joining the DeKalb County Police Department, Dr. Alexander held the position of Federal Security Director for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), United States Department of Homeland Security at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.  He has considerable experience in law enforcement and is a clinical psychologist.  Alexander served as Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services; Chief of Police in the Rochester Police Department, and several leadership roles at the University of Rochester Department of Psychiatry in New York. He began his law enforcement career in 1977 and also served with the Miami-Dade Police Department.  He was a law enforcement officer in Florida for 15 years. Dr. Alexander holds a doctoral degree in clinical psychology, a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
