Update: Armed Robbery Suspect Apprehended In Lithonia

Three DeKalb County schools were on lockdown during the incident.

The suspect in an armed robbery attempt Friday morning has been arrested without incident after barricading himself in a Panola Road residence.

DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parrish said around 9:45 a.m., a customer at the Family Dollar store at the corner of Panola and Young roads called 911 about the suspect coming into the store wearing a ski mask.

Parrish said the suspect was attempting to flee the Family Dollar when police came on the scene. The suspect fired at a DeKalb officer, who returned fire, she said. The officer was not injured. It is unknown at this time if the suspect was injured.

For a while, three DeKalb County schools near the area were on lockdown.

DeKalb officer observed a person kicking in the rear door of a home in the 1800 block of Panola Road. A SWAT team was brought in to make contact with the suspect. The suspect was apprehended in the early afternoon.

Ebone Allen told Patch her mother is an employee at the store and was present when the robbery occurred.

The store was also robbed yesterday (Dec.6) Family Dollar employee Katrina O'Neal told Patch. She was working at the store when the suspect, whom she said was not aggressive, rang the bell on the front counter. When O'Neal arrived, he demanded money. He had to buy something - a Reese's - in order for her to open the register. She said he made off with about $300.

Tomathy, unfortunately things are happening everywhere. It has nothing to do with the neighorhood.

the store that was there before closed because or stealing and several robberies....the neighborhood is nice but like Tomathy said it is bad all over.

Nope, nothing to do with the neighborhood. When things happen in Detroit, I'm sure of one thing, it's not a group of Sunday school kids causing trouble. If you want to pinpoint the number one reason why the USA is turning into a third world country, look at what the third world countries all have in common. And no it's not oxygen in the air. The proof is in the pudding and it's the 1,347,727 pound elephant in the room. Until these facts are brought out and a solution is achieved, it's going to get worse. Trust me, billions upon billions of dollars have been thrown at this problem and it keeps getting worse. Nothing works, so it's time to forge ahead and send those people back home or segregate once again. It is the only option. Even good old Abraham Lincoln knew this nation could never work with those people staying here, and was activily seeking a hospitable land for them before he was assassinated. His dream goes unrealized, and we loom closer to bankruptcy from all their entitlements. Even Detroit with all it's fine citizens can not come up with ten million dollars in tax revenue to save itself. I suppose they need more wage earners who are taxpayers in that city.
