Sheriff Hosts Back to School Bowl-a-Thon at Suburban Lanes

Students from the Decatur area were encouraged to stay in school and given backpacks filled with school supplies Thursday.

DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown and his staff hosted his fourth annual Back to School Bowl-A-Thon on Thursday at Decatur's . Sixty students from the East Lake and Decatur YMCA, Greenforest Community Baptist Church and Berean Christian Church shared in free bowling, pizza and the opportunity to get career and education advice from the attending staff members. The event was co-hosted by Thomas Walker, whose family owns Suburban Lanes, DeKalb Solicitor General Sherry Boston and staff members for District Attorney Robert James.

Culminating the bowl-a-thon was the presentation of free school supplies donated by Target, Walmart, Kmart, Rite-Aid and the hosting officials. The students, ages 6 to 16, received encouragement to stay in school from the sheriff and took an education pledge with Boston. Deputies prepared more than 150 backpacks filled with supplies. The remaining backpacks will be given to the United Methodist Children’s Home in Decatur.
