DeKalb Board of Education on Trial Thursday

There will a live webcast starting today at 1 p.m.

Updated Jan 17, 10:20 a.m.

State Representative Scott Holcomb (District 82-Tucker) issued a statement this morning at 10:18 a.m:

Yesterday afternoon, I was informed that the State Board of Education (“BOE”) was not going to webcast today’s proceedings concerning the DeKalb Board of Education. I then sent a request asking the State BOE to reconsider because of the public’s interest to observe the proceedings and the reasonableness of the request.

The State BOE quickly replied to me that they would consider my request. This morning, I was very pleased to receive notice that the State BOE met this morning and approved the webcast of today’s proceedings. I commend the State BOE for its quick action and for its commitment to transparency.

The hearing begins at 1 p.m. today and you can watch live via webcast here.

From a press release issued by Parents for DeKalb Schools:

Now that the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) has been downgraded to the accreditation level of Probation by SACS/AdvancED, the District is only one step away from losing its accreditation. See the report produced by SACS/AdvancED.

Today, Thursday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m., the Georgia State Board of Education will meet to determine if they should recommend to Governor Deal that he suspend the members of the DeKalb County Board of Education. This would allow him to clean house and effectively hit the "reset" button for the troubled school district. Many believe this is the best possible outcome for the long term health of DCSD. Read the summons here.

Complete contact information for the State Board can be found here if you'd prefer to call. It's important to understand that the Board could wait to decide what steps, if any, to take. SACS has given DCSD until 12/31/2013 to comply with its recommendations.

ATTEND today's hearing, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. to show your concern about the children of DeKalb County. There will be no opportunity for public comment. However, your presence is important.

The hearing will be held in the State BOE Boardroom at: Georgia Department of Education, 2070 Twin Towers East, 205 Jesse Hill Jr Drive, Atlanta GA 30334

Thank you Rep. Holcomb. So many concerned parents are also responsible for picking their children up in the afternoon so that being able to attend the hearing would have been difficult or impossible. Transparency of this process is so important, esp. if it ends up with a temporary board being appointed. You rock!
