Groups Say PDK Area is Best Choice for Animal Shelter

Many are against putting the new shelter at Johns Homestead in Tucker.

Johns Homestead supporters are among those in favor of putting a new $8 million animal shelter site next to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.

That's the word from a meeting Tuesday attended by more than 50 county residents, who want DeKalb leaders to narrow their considerations to the PDK site only, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.Β

The five-acre site in Chamblee would be preferable, for financial reasons, and out of respect for the homestead's history, said Mary Ann Roberts, according to the article: β€œPDK would be a much, much better and much cheaper location to go to than destroying a homestead that has been here since 1825."

Roberts is part of a community effort to create a nature preserve on the homestead's 50 acres.
