Jason Carter Running for Governor

Local state senator vying for Nathan Deal's position.

State Sen. Jason Carter, whose District 42 encompasses most of the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area, will enter the 2014 race for governor.

Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, first revealed his plans in an interview Wednesday with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He will formally announce today.

Carter, a Democrat, will be trying to unseat Georgia Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, who defeated Roy Barnes in 2010. Deal already faces primary opposition within his party from state Schools Superintendent John Barge and Dalton Mayor David Pennington.

Carter, 38, won a special election in May 2010 for the District 42 seat. He replaced former Sen. David Adelman, who was appointed ambassador to Singapore.

Carter won the general election later that year to secure a two-year term.

District 42 includes many neighborhoods from Buford Highway to Dekalb Avenue including North Druid Hills, Morningside, Druid Hills, East Lake, Kirkwood and Edgewood.
