Official: Initial Mason Mill Park Construction to Wrap Up Two Weeks From Now

Upgrades to the park's playground, parking lot areas and other improvements should be completed around Feb. 28, said a county official.

A new and improved version of Mason Mill Park should be ready for local residents by the end of the month, a county official said.

Rows of new parking spaces and a large, well-outfitted playground have been completed, and the county contractor, Ed Castro Landscaping and Construction, should completely finish its work around Feb. 28, said Robert Sims, DeKalb County's deputy director of architecture and engineering.

That work represents only the first phase of the park's makeover, which will also include in the construction of a new dog park. Bids on that job will soon go out, and work on the dog park will begin sometime in the spring, Sims said.

Other items to be completed by the end of the month include landscaping and stormwater runoff improvements and rentention pond adjustments to compensate for the new parking and playground, he said. Crews also paved a new entrance that runs alongside and behind .

That work and the playground bundled together represent $2.1 million of a total $7 million the county has invested in refurbishing the park. The improvements were mostly paid for with 2006 county parks bonds and left over bond monies, Sims said. Work began on the park in June.
