Should Legislature Hold Off on DeKalb Cityhood?

Article suggests calls growing to slow down on forming new cities in the county. What do you think?

An AJC story, available online only by subscription Tuesday, featured this headline -- Calls growing for pause in cityhood movement.

From the story: "A growing chorus is calling for the state to tap the brakes on metro Atlanta’s fast-cruising cityhood movement, saying the slowdown will help everyone better see the road ahead."

The story quotes DeKalb acting CEO Lee May, who is seeking a three-year moratorium against new cities in the county, and a Georgia State University public policy professor who has praised cityhood supporters for their civic involvement.

Mary Kay Woodworth, chair of the Lakeside City Alliance, tells the AJC such a move would be unfair to those cityhood groups who have already spent money for feasibility studies and would create an "enormous backlash."

At the moment, the biggest issue that divides cityhood groups in central DeKalb is that the Lakeside, Briarcliff and Tucker maps overlap each other in places, including the Northlake Mall area.

What do you think? Should the Legislature hold off on giving voters a chance to consider DeKalb cityhood? Or would a moratorium at this stage be unfair to cityhood groups?
