Holcomb Says City Moratorium Unlikely

Rep. Scott Holcomb and Rep. Coach Williams hosted a public input meeting yesterday evening regarding the Lakeside vs. Tucker city movements. It was standing room only at the Tucker Reid Cofer Library. It was a solid hour and a half of mostly citizen comments, from people of all ages.
The majority of the comments were regarding the desire to keep the Tucker community in tact the way it is now. City groups were not permitted to present any information and the public comments were limited to those who live in the mapped area that was zoned by Tucker 2014 (which does not mirror the Tucker zip code or census designation) and Lakeside (which is currently a high school, but it is not known as a community with any recognizable boundaries).   More details to come, but items to note are: 
#1) Holcomb claimed that he did not believe there would be a moratorium on this issue. He said it may come by way of nothing moving through committee to get to them to vote on, but there will not be a moratorium decree. 
#2) Several people in the Evansdale Magnet Elementary School community (who also do not currently live in the Tucker zip code, but were included on the Tucker 2014 map), believe that the cities will have a direct impact on their school feeder pattern. 
#3) Holcomb stated that he spoke with the House speaker who said he was hopeful that the DeKalb delegation would be able to figure out their border issues for themselves. 
#4) Politics may dictate which, if any, bill gets through but if none of them do, Holcomb will advocate to allow the city groups to continue working for a future referendum without having to raise the $30K for a feasibility study all over again.
Rep. Holcomb and Rep. Williams listened to the audience members who were able to voice their opinions directly into a microphone rather than writing them down.  There was also a brief written survey for attendees to complete.  As always, Rep. Holcomb's staff were all very cordial and accommodating.  
Rep. Holcomb reminded the group that we are already at Day 15 of a short 40 day legislative session.  If something does not happen within the next week or so, the chances of a city bill making it to the floor of the Senate or House for a vote are very slim.  If a bill does pass, voters will have a chance to vote on a city referendum this May, if they live inside the final boundaries of whichever city is able to move ahead.
