Book Talks: The Addicted Brain: Why We Abuse Drugs, Alcohol, and Nicotine

Written by UUCA’s own Dr. Michael Kuhar, this comprehensive, up-to-date book is about the addicted brain and the behavior of addicts. Actually, the two can’t be separated, and brain science is used to explain why, how and what happens when we become addicts. There is practical information about various treatments, and what you should look for in treatment. Why some people become addicts and why others do not is also discussed. The scientific parts, such as brain imaging, are put in the context of our everyday lives. Michael J. Kuhar, PhD, is professor of neuropharmacology in the Yerkes Research Center of Emory University. His general areas of interest include the brain, its structure and function, neuropsychiatric disease, and addicting drugs. He is one of the most highly cited scientists in his field, and has trained a large cadre of students, fellows and visitors, received a number of prestigious awards, and remains involved in many aspects of research and education. Copies of the book will be on hand for purchasing and personalizing after the presentation. Registration is not required.
