Emory Lavista Parent Council Meeting

The meeting will include a discussion about state schools funding and how it relates to a school's enrollment. The group will welcome Joe Martin, executive director of the Georgia School Funding Association.

It's been widely reported and reiterated by DeKalb County Board of Education members that the state financially penalizes the school system for schools that have enrollments of fewer than 450 students.

The parent council's session, titled "That Pesky 450 Count: How State Funding Really Works," will address, among other things, misconceptions about that issue and how its relates to the school system's current plan to shutter up to 14 schools and shift attendance zones and several schools across the county, said Marshall Orson, the parent council's co-president.
