Lakeside High's Academic Bowl Team Takes Runner-Up to Walton

The school earned $3,000 in scholarship money for its performance on the WSB-TV academic quiz show tourney.

's Academic Bowl was a runner-up to perennial champion, Cobb County's Walton High School, in WSB-TV's High Q high school quiz contest late last month.

The team of Abaho Katabarwa, Anne Grosse, Jacob Altman, Charles Pennell and Aliya Khan, won the chance to represent DeKalb County by beating Dunwoody High School in a preliminary match and then four successive contests to get to the final. Lakeside beat last year’s champion Brookwood High School of Gwinnett County in the semi-finals.

High Q is a 32-team quiz tournament hosted by TV station over several months. The Vikings, with Kevin Bai joining the team, nearly gave the school its fourth championship in five years in the Division 4-A Georgia Academic Team Association finals on March 26. They fell just short to Fulton County’s Chattahoochee High School.

Lakeside’s Academic Bowl team had won three of the last four 4-A state championships. The team has been coached by AP Literature and Advanced British Literature teacher Garry Saltmarsh, who was voted Lakeside High’s 2008 Teacher of the Year.
