Lakeside Student Takes Georgia United Scholarship

Michelle Vu received $1,000, which will go toward her education at Emory University.

Michelle Vu of in DeKalb County was the first runner up in the John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship competition and the recipient of $1,000.

She has a 4.0 GPA and plans on attending Emory University. Michelle is a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, Math Team, the Winter Guard, a Governor’s Honors participant, a UGA Merit Scholar and a Science Olympiad participant. An active community and church volunteer, Michelle is Vice Captain of the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Society at the Holy Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church. She is the daughter of Tang and Kim Vu of Stone Mountain.

Georgia United Credit Union (formerly Georgia Federal) is excited to announce the winners for their 2012 scholarship programs. A total of $12,500 was awarded through the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship program and the Archbishop John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship program and given to 13 high school seniors.

This is the 18th year Georgia United has given the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and the fifth year for the John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship. About $200,000 has been awarded to high school seniors through both programs. Yearly selection is based on academic accomplishments, leadership and participation in both school and community activities and a short essay competition. The top Vernon E. Carne Scholarship winner for 2012 was Karl-Mary Akre of Peachtree Ridge High School, and the top Archbishop John F. Donoghue Scholarship winner was Treva Tam of Blessed Trinity High School.
