Sophia Academy Student Leaders Study Healthcare

The middle schoolers were part of the school's summer Leadership Institute.

As part of the Summer Leadership Institute’s week-long study on “Healthcare: Access and Limitations,” rising sixth, seventh and eighth grade students visited The Good Samaritan Health Center in downtown Atlanta.

Good Samaritan is a nonprofit clinic and ministry founded by Dr. Bill Warren that offers a comprehensive range of services to children and adults who are without health insurance or the means to afford care. Students were guided on a tour through the clinic’s medical, dental and counseling wings, and they took in a presentation on healthcare policy in the United States given by Breanna Lathrop, a nurse practitioner at Good Samaritan who holds a dual degree in nursing and public health/policy from Emory University

The aspiring young leaders came away from the presentation and clinic with much concern for the nation’s healthcare system and for those who don’t receive care, and left the building chattering with ideas on how to address these concerns from a physical and spiritual standpoint. The Sophia Academy Leadership Institute addresses themes and topics each year relevant to current events and culture, seeking to develop minds and form leaders among Georgia’s young people.
