St. Pius Alum Wins College Award for Tutoring

Maeva Alexander, a 2009 grad, is the 2012 winner of the Patricia Arch Green award at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN.

alumna Maeva Alexander '09 (Tucker) has been selected as the 2012 winner of the Patricia Arch Green award at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN. Alexander will be presented with the award April 10 at a banquet honoring the winners of six service awards given by the Office of Civic and Social Engagement at St. Mary's.

Alexander was chosen due to her outstanding service and dedication to the College of Academy Tutoring program and activities, according to St. Mary's. She has given more than 650 hours to the South Bend community through the tutoring program as a teacher's assistant and after-school tutor at Coquillard Primary Center and St. Joseph County Public Library.

Kelly Roepke, student director of the Office of Civic and Social Engagement, out of which the tutoring program is also run, said, "Maeva is one of the most passionate people I know. She completely immerses herself in the causes that she is passionate about and conducts herself as a worthy role model in every capacity. Maeva's drive is amazing. She has so many roles on campus. And even with her crazy schedule, her positive outlook and kind attitude translates into everything that she does. I am inspired by her.”

Alexander, who will complete her undergraduate work in the spring of 2013, will pursue a graduate degree to become a certified speech-language pathologist. A communicative disorders major, she wants to work with elementary students on speech, hearing and language development after graduate school.

The Patricia Arch Green award goes to the a College Academy of Tutoring student with exemplary service in the program in at least one of the following areas: teacher's assistant (assisting a teacher in a classroom by providing one-on-one help to children, small group facilitation and finding new and creative ways to engage students in learning); after-school tutoring (providing assistance to children in Title 1 schools struggling with reading and math comprehension); or general commitment to the program and mission (attendance, participation in program events, etc.).
