A Walk In the Park--Mary Scott Nature Preserve

Mary Scott Nature Park, our new DeKalb County Park at 4150 Briarcliff Road (just north of Shallowford Road and behind the Shallowford Presbyterian Church actually)  has recently scheduled a series of Saturday Morning Walks with a guide/expert.

The walks will have different emphasis in different months.  All will be an hour or less in length.  It is recommended that you wear good walking shoes and bring water.  To join the walk (no reservations are necessary) assemble at the parking lot entrance just off Briarcliff Road at 9 am.

People will be allowed to explore MSNP on their own if they get bored or become interested in something they want to explore more fully away from the group.  All ages are welcome.

The focus on July 30, 2011 will be a meditative walk. Enjoying the park flora, lowering your blood pressure, and appreciating the natural resource around you are the goal of this morning.  Dr. Jeff Pendergrast is our leader for this Walk.  This Walk is rain or shine.  (Jeff Pendergrast says, “My best walks are in the rain.”)

On August 27, 2011 the focus will be plant life.  Natural/native plants are a big part of the Mary Scott Nature Park ecosystem. Georgia Native Plant Society member, Beth Nathan, will talk about native plants and what the existing plants tell us about the history and geology of MSNP

On September 24, 2011 Audubon member, Dave Butler, will guide us in a walk looking at the birds that inhabit these woods. Bring your binoculars for this one.

October 22, 2011 we will focus again on plants native to the region with Beth Nathan.
