Lakeside Softball Moves on to 4-A State Tourney

The Lady Vikings clinched second in Region 6A and a berth at the state softball tournament.

The Lady Vikings defeated Tucker on Tuesday 11-0 in five innings to clinch second in Region 6A and a berth at the AAAA state softball tournament. They go to regionals, but no matter what happens there, they automatically qualified for state by finishing second in the region’s regular season. The Lady Vikes won Thursday’s non-regional contest against Stone Mountain 14-3.

Marist hosts the regional tournament during the week of Oct. 3. Marist and Lakeside are seeded No. 1 and No. 2. The Lady Vikings have a bye on Monday and play on Tuesday against either Chamblee or Dunwoody pending the outcome of Monday’s game. The region tournament is double elimination and concludes on Thursday.

The Viking softballers’ 10-1 regional and 16-1 overall records are the best regular season softball record for Lakeside in recent memory. Lakeide’s only loss was to first-place Marist in extra innings. Chris Chilton of the DeKalb County School System athletic department says Lakeside has never qualified for the state tournament in softball.

The team has four seniors: Susanne Boden, Megan Brickhouse, Jazzmin Neal and
Jessica Thomas; five junior: Sophia Baur-Waisbord, Aubrey Blackstock, Marie Collop, Maddie Craddock and Kate Weaver; two sophomores: Caroline Bryant and Alyssa Crawford. Additionally, three junior varsity players were called up after their winning season was completed last week: sophomore Sarah Ann Powell and freshmen Ashleigh Dennis and Tatum Newsome. The team is coached by Lakeside physical education teacher Tricia Newmyer and community coach Scott Boden.

The four Senior players mentioned above and Team Manager Ariel Johnson were
honored at Senior Night immediately following Thursday's game.
