Silverbacks Issue Challenge to Supporters Group

The Atlanta soccer team will add bleachers behind the south goal if the Atlanta Ultras reaches its season ticket goal.

The Atlanta Ultras, the largest Atlanta Silverbacks supporters group, have an opportunity to score their own section behind the south goal if they account for 225 total season tickets for the 2013 NASL season.

The Silverbacks have been working closely with the Ultras to implement a few initiatives that will help their supporters group continue its growth. Silverbacks General Manager Andy Smith believes the incentive of having their own section behind the south goal at Atlanta Silverbacks Park will be one of those key initiatives.

“Anyone who has been to a game at Atlanta Silverbacks Park has surely noticed the incredible passion that the Atlanta Ultras have for the club and for the sport of soccer here in Atlanta,” Smith said. “We’re tremendously committed to helping their supporters group grow because their success will be beneficial for everyone – the fans, the club, and the city.”

The Ultras formed in late 2011, and according to the group’s president, Steve Gurlen, there were only two founding members. Since then, the Ultras have experienced impressive growth, occupying the lower rows of section 101 during 2012 home games at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. Going into next season, the Ultras have even bigger aspirations, says Gurlen.

“The passion for soccer in Atlanta is very real, and we’re starting to see it more and more on gamedays at Atlanta Silverbacks Park,” Gurlen said. “Our goal is to create a true soccer supporters group that can serve as a face for that passion and show the country what Atlanta soccer fans are really made of.”

The group, known for their fanatical and extremely audible support during games, has already designed and distributed its own group-specific soccer scarves, and has begun to assign leadership roles for the 2013 season. Gurlen also said that the Ultras plan on implementing a membership program that will come with a variety of benefits during the season.

Season ticket packages in their supporters section are priced at $160. Each package includes a ticket to 16 home games and access to a variety of benefits such as discounts on team merchandise and invitations to exclusive team events.
