St. Pius Boys Soccer Team Adds Individual Accolades

A group of current and former players have received additional honors from ESPN Rise magazine.

The boys soccer program continues to receive national recognition for its 2011 state championship season. In addition to the by ESPN Rise, two current members and one former player also received honors from the same publication. A representative from ESPN Rise will be on hand to present the national championship trophy Sept. 16 at the home football game versus North Springs.

Former Golden Lion and current Penn State keeper Andrew Wolverton was named first team All-America by ESPN Rise. Wolverton recorded 13 shutouts while helping St. Pius to a 20-0-1 record and its second state title in three years. He is also a member of the U.S. Under-18 National team player pool and has played internationally. Wolverton was named to the ESPN Rise All-State team as well.

Senior Drew Morgan and junior Tyler Alexander also received All-State accolades from ESPN Rise. Alexander led the Golden Lions with 18 goals during the 2011 campaign while Morgan chipped in 13 tallies. The two players return along with five other starters for the 2012 season. The Golden Lions defeated Region 5-AAA rival Woodward 5-4 in for the state championship in head coach David O’Shea’s first season at the helm.

The boys program becomes the second soccer program at St. Pius to be recognized as national champions in the previous three years. The girls soccer program was named national champions by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2009.Β
