St. Pius Loses State Championship to Buford 10-3

The Golden Lions played for the state AAA championship in football at the Georgia Dome tonight – the first state title match since they won the AA championship in 1968.

St. Pius' Golden Lions football team lost the Georgia AAA championship Friday night to Buford 10-3.

It was the first time the Golden Lions have played for the title since they won the AA state championship in 1968. Buford is the third team from Region 7 that St. Pius faced in the playoffs with Dawson County and North Hall being the others. The two teams met only twice before Friday's game back in the 1984 and 1985 seasons with each school winning once.

It was Buford's ninth state championship, and their first in AAA, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting.

Thanks for being first out of the gate with this. I wish I'd watched. Buford has been nationally ranked recently, so the St. Pius performance is impressive.
