St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

As the winter regular season winds down, the girls' basketball team continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association.

The winter regular season begins to wind down this week. Wrestling participates in the Area tournament while both basketball teams play the final home games of the regular season with one more week to play. Swimming and Diving has the week off before the state championships next weekend. Girls’ basketball continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the latest Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) AAA poll and No. 3 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll.

The Golden Lion girls’ basketball team took all three games it played last week.  Tuesday evening, St. Pius (18-3, 8-0 Region 5A-AAA) defeated Woodward, 46-33, behind Asia Durr and Sydni Payne who scored 11 points each. Emma Ucinski added 10 points in the win while Elizabeth Elliott grabbed seven rebounds. Durr and Payne led the Golden Lions with 14 points apiece in a 63-22 win over North Springs on Friday. St. Pius completed the week with a 50-30 win over Chestatee. Durr had 11 in the win and Laura Redmond chipped in eight while Anna O’Donnell collected 10 boards. St. Pius can clinch the first seed from Region 5A in the region tournament with a win over Riverwood on Tuesday night. The Golden Lions host the Raiders at 6pm and host North Atlanta Friday at 6pm.   

The boys’ basketball squad won one of three games last week. The Golden Lions (8-12, 2-6) fell to Woodward, 54-35 and North Springs, 44-38. On Saturday, the cagers knocked off Chestatee, 59-47. Will Maguire had 15 points with Daniel Crochet adding 10 on five-for-five shooting. Crochet also added seven rebounds to lead the team. The Golden Lions host Riverwood on Tuesday before entertaining North Atlanta Friday night. Both games will tip-off at 7:30pm.

Wrestling finished seventh at the Dekalb County Wrestling Championships. Robbie Martin finished first in his weight class as did Quinn Peragine. Harris Woodward finished fourth, Eamon Quinn fifth and Dalton Wilson sixth in their respective classes. Martin was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in DeKalb County. The Golden Lions travel to Lakeside for a meet tomorrow before travelling to Woodward for the Area Traditional Tournament this weekend.

Boys' and girls' swimming and diving finished second overall at the Karen Blackmon Invitational. The girls’ team won its division while the boys' finished second. The teams will now have the weekend off until the state championships Feb. 11-12 at Georgia Tech.
