St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

Both boys' and girls' soccer remain at the top of the AAA polls.

Spring sports are in full swing at . Boys' and girls' soccer continue to sit atop both Georgia Athletic Coaches Association AAA polls while boys' and girls' tennis both reside in the No. 2 spot in their respective polls. Baseball stays ranked at No. 7 in AAA this week.

Boys’ and girls’ tennis competed twice last week. The boys dropped both contests while the girls took one and did not finish the second match. The Golden Lions boys' tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 10 North Springs and lost 3-1 to No. 2 Starr’s Mill (AAAA). The ladies defeated North Springs 5-0 while the match with Starr’s Mill was not completed due to darkness. The netters will take on Riverwood and Marist this week.

Baseball recorded two victories last week. The Golden Lions (6-1-1) knocked off Greater Atlanta Christian 4-2 and defeated Northview 7-1. St. Pius X opened region play Monday at home against Riverwood before traveling to Columbia Wednesday. The Golden Lions nine will wrap up the week with Cedar Grove at home on Friday.

The girls' soccer team ran its record to 6-0 with two dominating region shutouts. Caroline Wootten scored three goals in a 6-0 blanking of No. 5 Grady. The ladies then routed North Atlanta 10-0 behind five goals from Amanda Vocelka. St. Pius will travel to North Springs Monday and head to the Jekyll Island Tournament of Champions Friday and Saturday.

The Golden Lion boys' soccer squad recorded two wins as well last week.  St. Pius X (4-0) shut out No. 9 Grady, 3-0, as Ryan Heard tallied 2 goals.  J.D. Mango found the back of the net twice for the Golden Lions in a 6-0 defeat of North Atlanta.  The Golden Lions had five goal scorers in the match.  St. Pius X returns to the pitch at North Springs on Monday and travel to Jekyll Island for the Tournament of Champions Thursday thru Saturday.

Girls' lacrosse continues to rack up double digit goal tallies as the Golden Lions (6-0) added three more wins to the victory total last week. Goalies Maya Pino and Katie Bleakly combined for a 16-0 shutout of Norcross. Katie Cordone scored four goals in the win. Cordone and Smith Sheehy each scored four goals in a 14-5 win at Brookwood. St. Pius won the opening region match of the season, knocking off Lakeside (Evans) 16-5 behind four goals from Anna Paulino and three tallies from Claire Homrich. The Golden Lions are in action this week, hosting North Gwinnett on Friday and Greenbrier on Saturday.

Boys' golf finished fifth at the 16th Annual Apple Mountain Invitational. Garrett Bernhardt shot a 74 to finish tied for tenth while Christopher Harris carded a 76 to tie for 21st. The Golden Lions will participate in the First Tee Invitational at East Lake Golf Club on Saturday. The girls' team was off last week and took on Blessed Trinity on Monday and travel to the Brookwood Invitational on Saturday.

Boys' lacrosse lost to Roswell last week in its only action. The Golden Lions will return to the field as they travel to Riverwood on Tuesday at 7:30pm. 

The Golden Lion track and field team will travel to Georgia Tech for a team meet on Friday and Saturday of this week after hosting a meet on Wednesday.
