St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The Golden Lions girls' basketball team moved up to No. 2 in the statewide AAA poll.

All four winter sports competed last week. The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams hit the hard wood three times while wrestling competed in three matches.  Swimming and Diving took to the pool twice as well. Girls’ basketball moved up to No. 2 in the latest Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) AAA poll.

The Golden Lions boys’ basketball team took the home opener, which also served as the first Region 5-AAA contest by defeating Washington, 37-36, holding last season’s top seed in the sub-region 30 points below its average. (2-2, 1-1 Region 5-AAA) dropped a hard-fought contest to North Springs, 52-45.  Sophomore Nick Harris was five for five from the field en route to 12 points and added eight rebounds. Blessed Trinity took a 41-31 win over the Golden Lions on Saturday. St. Pius hosts Lovett at 7:30pm Saturday night in the only action of the week before traveling to Birmingham, AL, for the Mountain Brook Holiday Classic, Dec. 21-23.

The girls’ squad ran its record to 7-0 (2-0 Region 5-AAA) on the young season with three wins. The Golden Lions used 21 points from freshman Asia Durr to defeat Region 5-AAA foe Washington, 62-16. Senior Sydni Payne chipped in 10 in the win. Friday night saw the ladies win the first region road game of the year, knocking off North Springs, 53-39. Emma Ucinski led three players in double figures with 14 points as Payne and Anna O’Donnell added 10 each. Anne Lloyd Bean scored 8 with O’Donnell and Ucinski collecting seven rebounds in the win. On Saturday afternoon, St. Pius rolled to a 54-21 victory over Blessed Trinity. Durr paced the Golden Lions with 13 points while Ucinski added 11 and Elizabeth Elliott 10. O’Donnell grabbed nine boards with Dylan Krause adding three assists. The Golden Lions host No. 5 Lovett (AA) on Saturday at 6pm in the only action this week before Christmas break.

Wrestling won its first dual meet of the season last week, defeating Pebblebrook and South Cobb at South Cobb High School. Over the weekend senior Robbie Martin took second at the Brookwood Invitational in his weight class while junior Quinn Peragine won first place in his respective weight class. Wrestling will participate in a multiple team meet at Cherokee High School on Saturday.

Boys’ and Girls’ Swimming and Diving took two wins last week. The Golden Lions defeated , 193-177, and knocked off Greater Atlanta Christian, 343-246.  St. Pius will host Lovett and Whitefield Academy this Saturday at Dynamo Swim Club at 9am.
