St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

St. Pius sports are dominating this spring with both boys' and girls' tennis and soccer leading in the statewide polls.

With spring break looming on the horizon, the spring sport programs were busy last week with more of the same to come over the next six days. Boys' and girls' soccer continue to sit atop both Georgia Athletic Coaches Association AAA polls while boys' and girls' tennis both sit in the No. 6 spot in their respective polls. Baseball moved up a spot to No. 7 in AAA this week and girls' lacrosse continues to be ranked No. 7 in its poll.

Girls' soccer continued its dominance with two wins last week to up its record to 11-0-1. The Golden Lions defeated No. 1 Milton (AAAAA) in penalty kicks after ending regulation and two overtimes in a 2-2 draw. Diana Soloaga and Caroline Wootten scored in regulation. The next night, St. Pius blanked Starr's Mill 2-0 behind goals from Kate Ward and Amanda Vocelka. St. Pius travels to Riverwood tonight and will host No. 5 Carrollton on Thursday night.

The Golden Lion boys' soccer squad ran its record to 11-1-1 with two wins and a tie last week. Starting off the week, St. Pius routed Milton 8-1. The next night, the Golden Lions used two goals from Drew Morgan en route to a 4-4 tie with No. 3 Starr's Mill (AAAA). Calvin Jackson and Tyler Alexander added one goal each in the stalemate. Alex Kowalski and Morgan each had two goals to lead five scorers in a 7-1 victory over Whitewater. St. Pius will take to the pitch this week with a road tilt at Riverwood on Tuesday before hosting No. 7 Carrollton on Thursday.

Boys' tennis competed in three matches last week. The Golden Lion netters dropped a match to No. 1 Woodward before defeating Dunwoody. The match with Lovett ended in a tie as rain swept thru the area. The girls' team swept all four matches last week. The ladies knocked off No. 1 Woodward and Dunwoody by 4-1 scores. St. Pius blanked Druid Hills 5-0 before edging No. 9 Lovett (AA).  Both teams travel to Westminster tonight  to wrap up the regular season.

Baseball swept all three games in Region 5 play last week. The Golden Lions (12-1-1) defeated North Atlanta 3-2 on Monday before knocking off Grady 9-3 and scoring an 8-1 win over Druid Hills. St. Pius hits the road for all three region contests this week as the team travels to McNair, North Springs and Arabia Mountain. The Golden Lion nine will host Westminster in a doubleheader at 1pm on Saturday before taking off for spring break.

Girls' lacrosse's only action last week saw the Golden Lions defeat Decatur 12-6. Next up for St. Pius (9-0) is a game at Holy Innocents' on Friday.

Boys' golf was paced by junior Garrett Bernhardt who fired back-to-back 74s at the Orchard Golf Club to help Team Georgia take back the Georgia/South Carolina Cup from the Palmetto State. The boys’ are back in action on Monday at the Big Red Shootout in Gainesville before heading to Settindown Golf Club at The Champions on Friday.

Boys' lacrosse took three games last week. The Golden Lions (4-5) will return to the field as they travel to Marist on Thursday night.

The Golden Lion track and field team will travel to Westminster for a team meet on Wednesday and will participate in a meet at Parkview on Friday.
