St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The girls' basketball squad feel slightly in the rankings this week, and the boys' team split two games.

The winter sports programs at St. Pius saw action last week as the wrestling and swimming teams participated in one match each while the boys' basketball team split two games. Girls' basketball fell to No. 5 in the latest Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) AAA poll and No. 4 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll after winning two of three games last week.

The Golden Lion boys' basketball team split region games last week. Collin McKay led St. Pius (7-8, 2-3 Region 5A-AAA) to a 43-40 win at North Atlanta on Tuesday with 12 points. Nick Harris collected seven rebounds in the win. Friday night before a near capacity crowd at home, Grady outlasted the Golden Lions, 51-45.  Will Maguire scored 15 points in the loss while Harris grabbed five caroms. St. Pius hosts Druid Hills tonight at 7:30pm and travels to Washington at 7pm on Friday in region tilts. The Golden Lions defeated Washington 37-36 earlier this season.

The girls' squad won two of three games last week, collecting two region wins before succumbing to No. 6  Greater Atlanta Christian (AA) on Saturday. The Golden Lions (13-3, 5-0) defeated North Atlanta 37-34 behind Anna O'Donnell's eight points while Elizabeth Elliott added seven points and nine rebounds. Asia Durr tallied 19 points with Sydni Payne chipping in 13 in a 61-26 win over Grady on Friday. Laura Redmond had seven rebounds in the contest. On Saturday, GAC handed the lady cagers a 45-30 defeat. Dylan Krause led all scorers with nine.  The Lady Golden Lions also host Druid Hills tonight at 6pm and hit the road at Washington on Friday at 5:30pm. St. Pius knocked off the Bulldogs 62-16 in the first meeting between the two teams this season.

Wrestling had a light week hosting Westminster last Tuesday. Quin Peragine, Dalton Scoggins, Eamon Quinn, Joseph Twiner, John Woodward and Nicholas Twiner all captured wins in their respective weight classes, but St. Pius dropped a close match. The Golden Lions will host a multiple team meet tomorrow at 4:30pm before travelling to Holy Innocents' Friday and Saturday for the Southeastern Prep Slam.

Boys' and girls' swimming and diving defeated Lovett and Marietta in a dual meet on Tuesday evening at Lovett. The Golden Lions totalled 360 points while Marietta tallied 120 and Lovett finished with 60. The squad will take on Dunwoody at Chamblee High School on Tuesday in its only action of the week.
