St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The Golden Lions opened the winter sports season with a series of big wins.

The winter sports season kicked into full gear last week, and three of the four teams saw action. Boys’ basketball opened the 2011 season with a win while wrestling participated in its first tournament of the year over the weekend. The girls’ basketball team, currently ranked No. 4 in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association AAA poll, won both match-ups during the week.

The Golden Lions boys’ basketball team lifted the lid on its 2011-12 campaign on the road with a 42-19 dismantling of Westminster. (1-0) held the Wildcats to five second-half points as sophomore Nick Harris secured a career high 16 rebounds including 7 offensive boards. Senior Collin McKay and junior Tyler Gee paced the Golden Lion attack with 10 points each. The boys’ squad take on a couple of Region 5-AAA foes in Washington at home on Tuesday at 7:30pm and hitting the road at North Springs Friday night at 7:30pm before returning home on Saturday to face Blessed Trinity at 2:30pm.

The lady cagers moved to 4-0 on the young season with two wins last week.  Tuesday night, the Golden Lions defeated Westminster, 63-17, as freshman Asia Durr led all scorers with 18 points. Senior Sydni Payne added 13 while Mackenzie Garrison chipped in 8 points in the effort. On Saturday, the Golden Lions opened the home season with a 48-46 victory over No. 3 North Gwinnett (AAAAA) behind 20 points from Durr. Payne scored 8 points and Elizabeth Elliott and Dylan Krause each added 6 in the win. Elliott grabbed 10 rebounds for the Golden Lions. St. Pius will take on Washington in the first Region 5-AAA game of the year at home Tuesday night at 6pm before traveling to region foe North Springs on Friday at 6pm. The ladies will host rival Blessed Trinity at 1pm Saturday afternoon.

Wrestling took part in a team meet at Stockbridge High School on Friday and Saturday. Junior Quinn Peragine took first place in his weight class at the Stockbridge Tiger Classic. The Golden Lions will take to the mat again against Pebblebrook at South Cobb High School Wednesday at 6:30pm before participating in a tournament at Brookwood High School this weekend.

Boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving will hit the pool today at at 5pm and at Greater Atlanta Christian School on Friday.
