St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The Golden Lions' girls' lacrosse team debuted in the AAA polls at No. 7 while both soccer teams continue to reign supreme in theirs.

Another week of spring sports saw another Golden Lion program enter the AAA polls as girls' lacrosse debuted at No. 7. Boys' and girls' soccer continue to sit atop both Georgia Athletic Coaches Association AAA polls while boys' and girls' tennis both dropped to the No. 6 spot in their respective polls. Baseball also fell a spot to No. 8 in AAA this week.

Baseball swept all three games in Region 5 play last week. The Golden Lions (9-1-1) defeated Riverwood 2-1 on Monday followed by a 12-2 win over Columbia and 13-0 blanking of Cedar Grove.  hosted North Atlanta on Monday and travels to Grady on Wednesday. The Golden Lions will host Druid Hills on Friday to wrap-up the week.

Girls' soccer opened the week with two shutouts before travelling to Jekyll Island for the Tournament of Champions. St. Pius (9-0-1) topped Region 5 rival North Springs 7-0 and dominated McEachern 10-0 earlier in the week. The ladies opened up the Tournament of Champions with a 2-2 tie against Auburn (AL) High School. Sophomore Amanda Vocelka scored the equalizer with under five minutes remaining to knot the contest. Vocelka also scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Spain Park (AL) with less than three minutes to go in that game. The Golden Lions travel to Milton today and Starr's Mill on Wednesday.

The Golden Lion boys' soccer squad also opened the week with a dominating win over North Springs before travelling to Jekyll Island. Calvin Jackson and Drew Morgan scored one goal apiece for the Golden Lions (9-1) in 2-0 wins over West Forsyth and Greenbrier. Alex Kowalski scored the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Tulsa (OK) Union. St. Pius is back in action with three matches this week. After hitting the road to play at Milton today and Starr's Mill on Wednesday, the Golden Lions will host Whitewater on Friday.

Boys' and girls' tennis competed once last week. The Golden Lion boys' tennis team defeated region rival Riverwood 5-0 behind solid play from Austin Boaz and the doubles teams of Barrett Merrill and Ryan Francis and Parker Jones and Jack Cote.The ladies dropped a 5-0 decision to Marist. 

Girls' lacrosse knocked off North Gwinnett 9-6 behind three goals each from Claire Homrich and Katie Cordone. Maya Pino recorded 16 saves in the win. On Saturday, St. Pius (8-0) defeated Area 4 rival Greenbrier 15-3 as Julia Dolgetta led eight different goal scorers with four tallies. The Golden Lions host Decatur on Thursday in the only action of the week.

Boys' golf finished fourth at the First Tee Invitational at East Lake Golf Club.  Garrett Bernhardt led the team with a 79. The girls' team finished eighth in its division of the event. The boys will take part in the Georgia/South Carolina Cup at The Orchard Golf Club this weekend. The ladies participated in the Northwood Classic on Monday and tee off in the Georgia Peach Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Boys' lacrosse lost to Riverwood 7-4 last week in its only action. The Golden Lions will return to the field as they travel to Starr's Mill on Tuesday and Greenbrier on Thursday.

The Golden Lion track and field team will host a team meet on Wednesday at 4:30pm and will participate in a meet at Starr's Mill on Friday.
